The Hawkston Whispers is the debut children’s novel by author and educator, me! Andrew Jennings. It’s an exciting coastal adventure for readers aged 8–13, packed with mystery, danger, humour and heart. When twins Jessica and Max arrive at the Old Coastguard Cottage for the summer after finishing year 6, they quickly discover that Hawkston is no ordinary seaside village. Strange encounters, hidden secrets, ancient shells and the powerful pull of the sea soon lead them into a thrilling mystery connected to Smuggler’s Island and the mysterious Whispers. Inspired by the dramatic coastline of the North East of England, the story is filled with lifeboats, castles, puffins, storms and unforgettable adventures.
The idea for The Whispers of Hawkston grew from a lifelong love of the Northumberland coastline and the incredible communities that live and work around the sea. From old fishing harbours and lifeboat stations to windswept beaches and towering cliffs, Hawkston has been inspired by the places, people and stories that make the North East so special. At its heart, this is a story about family, bravery, friendship and learning to truly listen to the world around you.

May 2nd 2026 – Editing – Pam has returned the second round of edits. Really great to get such positive feedback, and only some minor points of view inconsistencies to work out.
May 9th 2026 – Editing – Point of view inconsistencies were really powerful to spend time developing to ensure the reader has the best experience with the characters and storyline. Still more to do, but this time spent should be really worthwhile.
May 12th 2026 – I’ve finally submitted the third round of edits to Pam (editor), and she will return the completed final draft with minor cosmetic changes for approval or further edits! Really exciting times. My publisher, The Literacy Shed Publishing, has also confirmed they are exploring different illustrators to create the front cover! This surely has to be the cool bit!
